Beat the eggs, sugar and vanilla extract together for , or until the mixture is thick and pale.

Sift the flour and salt together twice and fold it into the egg mixture in quarters, adding the melted butter with the last quarter addition.

Pour batter into a lightly greased 8" or 9" cake pan and bake the cake in a preheated 350 degree oven for or until a cake tester, inserted into the center, comes out clean.

Let cool in pan for , then invert onto a cake rack to cool completely.

Brush cooled cake with syrup and preserve mixture, if desired.
