Good friends once served this dish to me at a backyard barbecue and I knew I had to have the recipe. This is a rich, German-style salad made by members of their family for generations.

Place the potatoes in a large saucepan, cover with lightly salted water and bring to a boil over high heat.

Lower the heat and cook the potatoes for , or until they are fork tender.

Drain the potatoes and when they are cool enough to handle, peel and slice them about 1/4-inch thick.

Put them in a large casserole dish.

While the potatoes are cooking, fry the bacon until it is crispy.

Remove the bacon from the pan, crumble the pieces and set them aside.

Place the onions on top of the potatoes in the casserole.

Heat the butter until it melts and starts to brown.

Pour the browned butter over the potatoes and onions.

Scatter the bacon on top.

Sprinkle the casserole with salt and pepper.

Pour the vinegar and water over all the ingredients.

Toss the ingredients and serve or let cool to room temperature.

Do not serve cold.
