It may only be a legend, but this is a dish that supposedly tempted the leader of religious community to break his diet. No wonder, with its tender potatoes, tangy anchovies and rich, creamy sauce.
Prep time: less than 30 minutes

Instructions
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
Using one TB.
of the butter, grease a casserole dish.
Sprinkle in the bread crumbs and tip the dish to coat the bottom and sides evenly.
Turn the casserole over and shake out the excess onto a plate; set the plate aside.
Put the remaining tablespoon of butter and the vegetable oil in a skillet set over moderate heat.
When the butter has melted and looks foamy, add the onion and cook for or until it has softened.
Remove the pan from the heat and set aside.
Place a layer of 1/3 of the potato slices in the bottom of the casserole, top with half the onion and half the anchovies.
Sprinkle with some ground white pepper.
Repeat this layer, then end with a layer of potato slices on top.
Pour the half and half over the casserole and place the butter bits evenly on the top layer.
Sprinkle with the reserved bread crumbs.
Bake for or until the potatoes are tender and liquid is almost completely absorbed.
