This traditional loaf is sweet and moist. It’s perfect when served plain, as an accompaniment to coffee or tea and also makes a fine breakfast. Or use it at your next turkey dinner.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Sift together the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder and baking soda.

Add the butter in chunks and cut it into the dry ingredients until the mixture is crumbly.

In a separate bowl, beat the egg, orange juice and orange rind together until the mixture is uniform.

Add the liquid ingredients to the dry ones.

Stir only until the ingredients are blended.

Pour into a greased 9”x5” loaf pan.

Bake for about one hour or until a cake tester inserted into the middle comes out clean.
