Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Peel the pears, cut them in half, and remove the cores.

Rub the fruit with the cut side of the lemon.

Put the pears into a baking dish.

Place the wine, sugar, cinnamon sticks, cloves, salt, and the lemon half in a saucepan.

Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat.

Pour the mixture over the pears.

Cover the dish and bake the pears .

Remove the cover and bake another , basting the pears once or twice during this time.

Let the pears cool slightly or completely before serving them.

Serve the pears with Amaretto cookies, ice cream, or both.

You may spoon the baking liquid over the pears or boil it in a saucepan for a few minutes to reduce it to a syrupy consistency.
